Summary

The phrase "food, clothing, and shelter" refers to the three fundamental necessities of human life. From ancient times, humans have produced and worn clothing by processing textile materials. The textile industry is also of great importance to economic historians. The development of cotton and textile manufacturing was central to the Industrial Revolution in Britain, the birthplace of modern economic growth. Similarly, textiles played a pivotal role in the early stages of industrialization in many developing countries, including Korea in the latter half of the 20th century.

This course examines the historical development of Korea’s textile industry in the 20th century, focusing on the period from the colonial era through the 1980s, with brief references to developments after the 1990s. It explores the growth of key sectors such as cotton spinning, weaving, and synthetic fiber manufacturing, as well as the subsequent decline of the industry. Through this course, students will not only gain an overview of the Korean textile industry’s evolution, but also deepen their understanding of Korea’s broader economic development growth path.
