Summary
This course introduces cases of naturalized citizens who settled on the Korean Peninsula after the Imjin War, the activities of the Yeongseonsa (courtiers) dispatched to Qing in 1881 to study modern civilization, an 1895 travelogue compiling Western culture based on study abroad experiences, an 1897 poetry collection reciting the first-ever trip around the world, and novels by an author who was part of the first labor immigration group and lived as an immigrant in the United States. These represent cases of individuals who experienced relatively long periods of exchange and left behind detailed writings or materials. Students will have the opportunity to read vivid historical materials based on explanations of the historical significance of each case.
