KEKA Working Papers No. 12

This study investigates the construction plan and schedule of Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan Shipyard, which commenced on March 23, 1972, with completion aimed for June 1974. The first ship order from George Livanos was set to begin construction in February 1973, prior to the shipyard's completion. The research highlights Hyundai Construction's comparative advantage in labor management and concentration, emphasizing the labor-intensive aspect of their approach as their primary advantage in an industry with a weak foundation. This study posits that Korea's shipbuilding industry represents a labor-intensive productivity revolution in developing heavy industry. By examining the construction process of the Ulsan Shipyard, this paper seeks to explore the intergenerational benefits of economic development related to the labor-intensive industrialization of heavy industry.
